NCAA banned individual school TV contracts in 1951

Penn sued, but was not successful, and they dropped the TV contract. NCAA had voted to expel the Quakers from the NCAA if they didn't drop it.

Notre Dame also had its own TV contract then. They decided to get around the ban by recording their games and their telecasts became replays only. The benefit of their doing this is that it has created a large inventory of Notre Dame football games in the 1950s and 1960s that exist today. They are black and white only, but they do exist.

This is what you call restraint by the NCAA.

ESPN is never going to have them all. They are not going to pay the B1G enough to have theirs 100%, and they have made it clear they don't want the Big XII. I can see why they want the PAC12, but they aren't going to overpay for it.

It will be interesting to see what happens. Right now the Big XII and PAC 12 are overpaid. That may come to an end in 5 years or so. I don't have the impression that Fox or ESPN want to overpay for either again. They both wanted the B1G. Games with Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, and Penn State get ratings.
